Forestry

Why are forest industries important in South East NSW?

Forestry is an important part of our community, and a vital part of our economy.

Everyone loves wood, whether they use it to build and heat their home, construct their kitchen, or use paper products for their food and other household requirements.

Wood can be considered the perfect renewable resource because it is recyclable, biodegradable, non-conductive, and non-toxic in the environment. And importantly, we can harvest trees sustainably, whilst our natural and planted forests provide shelter for many of our native plants and animals.

As a net importer of timber products, Australia has a unique opportunity to expand and refine our softwood and hardwood timber industries under our already strict environmental controls and chain-of-custody oversight to increase our sovereign capability in meeting growing demand for wood and fibre in the built environment.

The South East NSW Forestry Hub is part of the Commonwealth Government's initiative in investigating new techniques in the manufacture of wood and fibre products, while creating certainty of wood supply through increasing plantations and improving harvest practices, and recognising the importance of forestry in combating climate change.

It is our mission to collaborate with traditional owners, foresters, private landholders and the community to bring Australia to the forefront of wood and fibre innovation and do its part in protecting the global environment.
